"Those from among you shall build the old waste places; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations;

and you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to dwell in."

Jesus Christ:

(Matthew 24:14)

"And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come."

William Bradford, Governor of the Pilgrims, Speaking of Them:

(From Bradford's Of Plymouth Plantation)

         "Last and not least, they cherished a great hope and inward zeal of laying good foundations, or at least making some way toward it, for the propagation and advance of the gospel of the kingdom of Christ in the remote parts of the world, even though they should be but stepping stones to others in the performance of so great a work."

George Washington's Prayer for the United States of America:

(Appears on a plaque in St. Paul's Chapel in New York City and at Pohick Church, Fairfax County, Virginia, where Washington was a vestryman, 1762-84)

"Almighty God; We make our earnest prayer that Thou wilt keep the United States in Thy Holy protection; and Thou wilt incline the hearts of the Citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to Government; and entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another and for their fellow Citizens of the United States at large, and particularly for their brethren who have served in the Field.

And finally that Thou wilt most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that Charity, humility, and pacific temper of mind which were the Characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed Religion, and without a humble imitation of whose example in these things we can never hope to be a happy nation.  Grant our supplication, we beseech Thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen."

808.  Washington, George. June 8, 1783, original source of prayer is the concluding paragraph in Washington's farewell circular letter sent to the governors of the thirteen states from his headquarters in Newburgh, New York. Daniel Webster, Speaking of America's Founders:

(America's God & Country, Pg. 671)

            "The Bible came with them.  And it is not to be doubted, that to the…universal reading of the Bible…men were much indebted for right views of civil liberty."

        He also said,  "If religious (i.e. Christian) books are not widely circulated among the masses in this country, I do not know what is going to become of us as a  nation.  If truth be not diffused, error will be; if God and His Word are not known and received, the devil and his works will gain ascendancy.  If the power of the Gospel is not felt throughout the…land, anarchy and misrule…corruption and darkness will reign without…end."

Abraham Lincoln, Speaking of The Holy Bible:

(America's God & Country, Pg. 388)

        "In regard to this Great Book, I have but to say, I believe the Bible is the best gift God has given to man.  All the good Saviour gave to the world was communicated through this Book.  But for this Book we could not know right from wrong.  All things most desirable for man’s welfare, here and hereafter, are to be found portrayed in it…"

Robert E. Lee:
